Abstract
Dementia is an insidious and progressive neurodegenerative disorder of the central nervous system characterized by the decline of mental functions including learning, balance, orientation, language, and personality, and it affects a patient’s social and professional lives. Alzheimer’s disease accounts for 50-80 % of all dementia cases, and the rate increases with age. Oxidative stress, inflammation, vascular, genetic and environmental factors, and lifestyle have been shown to affect the etiopathology of dementia. Preventing or delaying dementia would reduce its social and economic burden.
