Abstract :
Information and communication technologies have not only extended the study field of scientific research but also helped reveal these research fields as well, and learning analytics is one of them. Learning analytics is regarded as a new field that aims at reaching tendencies or structures by making use of large educational data sets to provide individual learning environments supporting the learner in higher education and to maintain the development of the higher education system. Though it is in its development phase, in the report of “NMC Horizon Report 2014: Higher Education”, learning analytics was defined as a field in which it is time to conduct the adaptation studies in one year or in a shorter period of time. On the other hand, in Turkey, there is not enough scientific research conducted on Learning Analytics. The present study aimed at presenting the theoretical foundations of learning analytics as a new field, its definitions, the structure and scope of the field, research environments and related tools. A study on social network analysis was conducted as an example of research to be carried out in these environments and tools, and the results obtained were summarized.
