Abstract :
The aim of this paper is to understand pre-service teachers views of social-emotional learning and its importance on teacher training programs. Therefore, semi-structured interviews were used to understand early childhood and primary pre-service teachers’ views of social-emotional learning in-depth. Criterion sampling is used in this research. Pre-service teachers who took the most of the pedagogy courses and registered for the teaching practice course are chosen as criteria. Thus, 23 pre-service teachers who enrolled at the primary and early childhood education departments at one of the universities in Turkey during the 2014-2015 academic year were participated the research. Findings from interviews revealed that pre-service teachers do not have adequate knowledge about social-emotional learning and they should be supported to develop themselves regarding the subject. Besides, increasing the pre-service teachers awareness of social-emotional learning should also be considered in the courses of school experience and teaching practice.
