The Relationship Between Quantitative and Qualitative Abilities of Students in ÖSS and LES
Abstract :
The change in the abilities of students is an important topic for researchers. In Turkey, there are high stake examinations, which focus on quantitative and qualitative abilities of students, for student selection to undergraduate and graduate programs of universities. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relation between university entrance examination and graduate school examination based on quantitative and qualitative abilities in Turkey. The following questions guided the study: is it possible to predict graduate school examination (LES) scores using university entrance examination (OSS) scores?; among quantitative ability and qualitative ability, which one is more stable over time? This study is unique as it is the only study that investigated predictive validity of OSS scores on LES scores. This study used longitudinal dataset of 43505 students who took OSS and then LES (four years later). The canonical correlation method was used to identify relationship between OSS and LES. The results showed that there was a significant relationship between OSS and LES scores and it was possible to predict quantitative and qualitative abilities of students at the university graduation using their high school graduation abilities. Relationship between quantitative abilities was stronger than qualitative abilities. Quantitative scores were more influential in predicting LES scores using OSS scores.
