Abstract :
On a sector and geographical basis the iron and steel industry in Turkey is clustered in the Adana section of the Mediterranean region with a total of 10 iron and steel facilities active in the provinces of Hatay and Osmaniye producing end products from raw steel. Of the 32 iron and steel facilities in Turkey, 31.3% are in Hatay and Osmaniye. In addition, 46.7% of the rolling plant in Turkey producing profiles, wire rod, ribbed and round construction iron from the billet they purchase are within the provinces of Hatay and Osmaniye. In 2013, 36.3% of employment in iron and steel industrial facilities producing end product from raw steel are in the provinces of Hatay and Osmaniye. In addition, in the Hatay-Osmaniye region liquid steel production capacity increased to 15.8 million tons over the last five years, in line with growth in the sector. The Hatay-Osmaniye provinces have a 31.5 % share of Turkish steel production capacity which was 50.2 million tons in 2014. In this research, amongst the qualitative research methods, a situation study was employed. The reasons for the clustering of the iron and steel industry in Hatay and Osmaniye provinces is a matter of location: a location proximate to the Mediterranean basin and, in particular, to the Middle East and the north Africa markets, the logistic infrastructure and a sufficient level reached in the technical programs of regional universities, to fulfil the requirements of the iron and steel industry.
