Abstract :
Aim: In the study, it is aimed to evaluate the causes and consequences of the application in elderly admitted to the emergency room in the province of Burdur in 2009. Materials and Methods: The data of this cross- sectional study was obtained from the records of Burdur State Hospital Emergency Department between 01.01.2009-31.12.2009. Age, gender, health insurances, time of emergency room admission, diagnosis of the disease in the emergency room, consequences of the disease and services for hospitalized elders are the records used as data. Data were analyzed using SPSS 10.5 package program. Results: 15.0% of the applicants in Burdur State Hospital Emergency Department in 2009 are elderly people. 54.0% of the elderly admitted to the emergency room are women. The mean age is 75.0 (± 6.6) and median is 75 (65-101). The most common reasons for application were circulatory (22.0%), respiratory (17.0%), musculoskeletal (17.0%), digestive (10.0%) and endocrine system complaints (4.0%). Applications for circulatory and digestive system complaints were significantly higher in women, while complaints related to respiratory system were in men. 93.0% of the elderly were outpatient diagnosed and treated, 7.0% were hospitalized, 0.1% were died and 0.1% were referred to another city. The rate of men (56.0%) was significantly higher than women in elderly who were hospitalized in services. 20.0% of the elderly were hospitalized in Internal Medicine, 19.0% in Pulmonary Diseases, 19.0% in Neurology, 9.0% in Orthopedic and 8.0% in Cardiology service. Hospitalization rate in Orthopedic and Neurological Intensive Care was significantly higher in women, while hospitalization rate in Cardiology, Pulmonary Diseases and Urology Service was in men. Conclusion: The elderly constituted 15 of every 100 applications to the emergency service. 7 out of approximately every 10 elderly were outpatient treated. In this respect, the operation of the referral system and the development of primary care services for elderly health will increase the quality and accessibility of elderly health care services and eliminate the unnecessary use of health expenditure.
