Comparison of the sociodemografic features, depression and anxiety levels in patients with asthma and tuberculosis
Abstract :
Aim: In the present study we aimed to compare sociodemografic features, levels of anxiety and depression among inpatients with asthma and tuberculosis in a chest disease hospital. Methods: Thirty three asthma and thirty three tuberculosis patients were assessed by the Spielberger state-trait anxiety scale, the Beck Depression Inventory and the sociodemografic features. Results: The mean ages of asthma and tuberculosis patients were 65± 9 and 41± 15 years old, respectively (p: 0.001). All patients were married in asthma group and 60 % of patients were married in tuberculosis group (p: 0.001). Depression were founded in 27 % of asthma patients and 15 % tuberculosis patients. (p: 0.2). Beck Depression total scores were 16± 7 in asthma and 13± 9 in tuberculosis patients (p: 0.2). States and Trait anxiety scores were 39± 8, 43± 7 in patients with asthma (p:0.3) and 36± 9, 43± 10 in patients with tuberculosis (p: 0.9). Significant correlations were founded with beck depression scores and states (r: 0.47, p: 0.001) and trait (r: 0.64, p: 0.001) anxiety inventory scores. Also significant correlations were founded with states and trait anxiety inventory scores. Conclusion: Patients with asthma were significantly older age and lower economic status than tuberculosis patients. Patients with single were significantly higher in tuberculosis. Depression and anxiety levels were similar and depression levels were correlated with states and trait anxiety levels in asthma and tuberculosis.
