Tobacco Products and Alcohol Usage Situations, and Approaches to Smoking of the Students of Süleyman Demirel University

Purpose: The aim of this study is to determine the tobacco products-alcohol usage situations and approaches to smoking of the students of Süleyman Demirel University in 2009-2010 academic year. Material and Method: The study was planned in descriptive type, students were chosen randomly and questionnaire form was used in collecting the data. Results: 1309 students (682 female/627 male) in the range of 17-30 participated in this study. At the end of this study, amongst the female students, it was detected that 66.1% had no bad habits, 28.2% smoked cigarettes, 17.2% smoked hookah, 1.6% smoked pipe-cigar and 14.5% drank alcohol, and amongst the male students: 30.9% had no bad habits, 60.4% smoked cigarettes, 37.5% smoked hookah, 13.9% smoked pipe-cigar, 36.5% drank alcohol and 12 students used drugs. The six students having all bad habits were male. 22% of students smoking started wondering, 18,2% started with friends encouragement, 4,0% started because of smoking parents. 92,3% of the students stated that they know the hazards of smoking. 10,2% claimed that they would spend the last money they had on cigarette. Most of the students (66,5%) supported the smoking ban. Conclusion: The percentage of smoking and drinking alcohol of students attending SDÜ is at the average of Turkey. Most of the students know the hazards of smoking. Majority of the students have negative attitude against smoking. The attitude of students must be taken into consideration in developing successful strategies in struggling of smoking.
