Abstract :
Background: It is aimed to investigate the seroprevalence of HBsAg, antiHCV and antiHIV of patients undergoing open heart surgery in our cardiovascular surgery clinic. Methods: The medical records of 480 patients who underwent elective or emergency open heart surgery between October 2006 - January 2012 in our clinic were retrospectively evaluated in terms of HBsAg, antiHCV and antiHIV. Statistical analysis of collected data was performed by using the SPSS software (15.0) with Student s t test and chi-square test. Results: Of the 480 patients included in the study, 320 (66.7%) were male and 160 (33.3%) were female. The mean age of men was 61±11 and the mean age of women was 59±14. Five (1%) patients were positive for HBsAg and 6 (1.2%) patients were positive for antiHCV. None of the patients had antiHIV positivity. No statistically significant difference was found between the male and female patients in terms of HBsAg, antiHBs, antiHCV, and antiHIV seropositivities (p = 0.547, p = 0.186, p = 0.975, p = 1.00 and p = 0.082, respectively). Conclusion: The seroprevalence of HBV was found to be lower, and the seroprevalence of HCV was found to be similar in comparison to the general population in patients undergoing open heart surgery in Abant Izzet Baysal University Hospital of Health Research and Practice and no antiHIV seropositivity was detected.
