Title Of Article :
Incidence and Morphometry of Sutural Bones
Abstract :
Aim: There are a few studies about sutural bones (Wormian) in Turkish population in the literature. We aimed to collect data about morphometry and incidence of this variation. Methods: Wormian bone, morphomety and variation of sagittal, coronal, lambdoid, squamous, occipitomastoid sutures were investigated in 50 skulls which belong to Dokuz Eylül and Süleyman Demirel Universities Faculty of Medicine Anatomy Departments. Results: It has been detected that lambdoid suture contains the maximum amount of wormian bone (28%) and 8% os incae, and that coronal suture contains 2% wormian bone, which has not been detected in some studies. Besides, in 4 cases 8% sagittal synostosis and again 8% persistent frontal suture (metopic suture) have been noted. Conclusion: It is important that knowledge of variation of cranium for anthropologists, radiologists and neurosurgeons, therefore we hope the data presented would benefit for the future studies and surgical procedures of the cranium.
