Abstract :
Methotrexate (MTX) is one of the indispensable chemotherapeutic agents for cancer patients. But, MTX induce some adverse effects such as nephrotoxicity and hepatotoxicity. Thus cause dose limitations and terminate the cancer therapy. This will cause decrease in the survival of cancer patients. Hence, we aimed to summarize the MTX’s action mechanism on hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity, which of those are most known adverse effects of MTX. However, taking precautions in MTX treatment is crucial in chemotherapy. According to the literatures, reactive oxygen species (ROS) triggered oxidative stress is responsible in MTX-induced hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity. Hence, the MTX treatment must be accompanied with antioxidants to protect the patients from those adverse effects.
