Abstract :
The aim of this study is to determine the effect of the feeding direction, cutting direction, and feed speed on surface roughness at planing of cedar (Cedrus Libani A. Rich) wood. 120 test samples were prepared to achieve that aim. When preparing the specimens, the wooden materials were planed at a cutting depth of 1.4 mm in a tangential and radial cutting to the annual rings in a milling machine with 4 blades and 85 mm diameter by feeding in a pin turning direction and a pin counter turning direction at feed rate of 6 m/min, 9 m/min. and 12 m/min and a pin turning speed of 7200 rpm. The surface roughness values of the specimens were determined according to the ISO 4287 standards. The surface roughness was evaluated according to the Ra, Rz, and Ry principles. As a result, smoother surfaces could be obtained in the planing realized by feeding in a pin turning direction, likewise, the tangential direction produced smoother surfaces compared tothe radial direction and as the feed rate decreased, the surface roughness also decreased.
