Main Principles and Aproaches in Structural Strenghtening of Historical Buildings

All activities in the field of the preservation of historical buildings aim to carry over them into the future with structural integrity while respecting the authenticity. Nevertheless, an addition for structural strengthening, by any means, is an intervention to the authentic fabric which has to be handled delicately. Unfortunately in our country, the principals of structural strengthening has not been discussed fairly enough under this delicate balance between conservation and intervention. In this study, main approaches in structural strengthening of historical buildings are studied and reconsidered through restoration principles in existing charters and regulations; and the necessity of the joint education of technical parties, especially civil engineering and architecture, is underlined.
