Smart Grids: Applications of Electronic Meters

As integration of electrical networks with the information technologies, smart grids ensure the efficiently use of electrical energy in all steps of a power system like generation, transmission and distribution. Smart electronic meters, an important part of smart grid systems, provide some benefits as reading the electrical meters remotely thus decreasing the routine billing processes of utility companies and offering the ability of centralized control for the consumed energy as well. This study deals with remote reading of electrical meters by the help of smart grid technologies and presents an effective method that can accurately analyze the technical loses and illegal energy usage on the grid. Taking into account of total losses on Turkey electrical grid is about 20% including both technical losses and illegal consumption, it is considered that the method presented in the study will make a significant contribution to the national economy by using the energy sources efficiently and determining the illegal consumptions accurately.
