Abstract :
In recent years, for the purpose of reducing environmental pollution, studies about recycling waste material in construction sector has accelerated. Reusability of waste materials reduces using of limited natural resources and resolves the problem of storing waste materials. Every year, marble quarries and marble processing plants produces tons of waste marble dust. Ready mixed concrete industry is a branch of industry which waste marble dust is usable. In this study, how using waste marble dust affects durability of concrete-which is one measure of sustainability is researched in carbonation factor. Determining carbonation depth of concrete-which blended waste marble dust (WMD) that substituted with cement at different rates-is taken as a goal. For this goal, four different concrete mix –with the same slump- substituted with 0%, 5%, 10% and 15% WMD is prepared. 28 days standard cured samples were exposed to carbonation for 56 days and their carbonation depths were measured. Samples which has become carbonated and not carbonated, tested with ultrasonic pulse velocity, and their capillary coefficent, compressive strength and abrasion resistance are determined. As a result, carbonation mostly seen in sample which contains 15% WMD. After the carbonation experiment, it’s obtained that as WMD amount increases, carbonation depth and compressive strength increases; and it’s also obtained that abrasion resistance and capillary coefficient decreases. Furthermore, on the purpose of reducing environmental pollution, it’s reached that optimum substitution percent of WMD in concrete production is 5% and the optimum usage of WMD affects sustainability of concrete positively.
