Title Of Article :
The General Comparison of the Shipbuilding Traditions of Mediterranean and Indian Ocean
Abstract :
The shipbuilding techniques of the Indian Ocean were different in history than the ones in the Mediterranean in the period until the arrival of the Portuguese to region. We explore these differences and summarize the reasons behind these traditions. The study proposes that these differences cannot be understood by just contrasting the geographical factors, but that political and cultural conditions must also be compared. Accordingly, it is seen that while political conditions were especially important in the development of ships in the Mediterranean, ships in the Indian Ocean were essentially designed with the climate and the geography in mind. In conclusion, it is expressed that similar studies on technology development should also consider material, cultural, social and political factors.
