On Bourdieu’s Materialist and Political Reading of Religion
Abstract :
In this study, it is argued that Pierre Bourdieu’s aprroach to religion in the framework of field theory is developed through taking into consideration understandings of religion of Marx, Durkheim and especially Weber who are the most important three names of Classical Sociology. In these discussions, Bourdieu constructs an approach to religion through sometimes approving sometimes opposing to the thinkers the aforementioned. Through improving Weber’s idea of religion as worldly destination Bourdieu claims that religion is a field knitted with capital and power relations like economic or political field and this field is an objective space operating free from will and intentionality of subjects. In this study, it is examined speculative backround of Bourdieu’s materialist analysis on religion through taking into account of his meta theory.
