Abstract :
Because of its high genetic diversity, high adaptability, nutrient content, type of industrial use, and therefore, its economical benefits, walnut is the mostly scrutinized species. Based upon the technological advances, various types of research studies numerically increased on walnut species both in our country and abroad. In Turkey, the first scientific study about walnuts was made in 1971. Since 1971 the first publication in the walnut literature in Turkey, all scientific studies have been grouped and evaluated. The results showed that academic publications consisted of 107 master theses, 225 isolated studies, 57 reviews, and 12 books, totalling up to 401 records on walnut studies in the last half century. While 31% out of the studies on walnut were carried out by the year 2000, 69% of the studies on walnut were performed in last 15 years period. Breeding and propagation studies have dominated both in graduate theses and isolated research studies since 1971. Additionally, other disciplines out of Horticultural Sciences have researched walnut in terms of the importance of nutritious value of walnut, the importance of walnut in human health, walnut in forestry, and industrial use of walnut timber.
