AN EXAMPLE OF THE PROBLEMS OF HISTORY TEACHING IN TURKEY: The Perception of Internal and External Enemies in “Revolution History and Kemalism” Textbook of Kemal Kara
Abstract :
In this study historiography in Turkey and its effects on history teaching are examined. In this article, the subject is analyzed in the context of Kemalist ideology and official history discourse. The “Revolution History and Kemalism” textbook which was written by Kemal Kara is chosen for being the example. History in Turkey is written by the help of the official history discourse which was built up in Early Republican Period and prioritized after then. With this historiography method, an “us” and “the other” division is created. History is explained only by focusing on Turkey and Turks in terms of wars and eposes. In this article, the idea that in order to democratization or neutralization of history teaching, perspectives of otherized groups should be included in the analysis so should the official history discourse is underlined.
