CHANGES IN INCOME AND TAX STUATIONS OF KAYSERİ HACI KILIÇ QUARTER GUILDS IN ACCORDANCE WITH THEIR OCCUPATIONS DURING 1873-75

In this study, the stuation of guilds in Kayseri Hacı Kılıç Quarter has been investigated for the period of 1873-75 deciphering the Records of Tezkire-i Ruhsâtiye-i Esnaf as a most compre-hensive archieve work about guilds in KAYTAM Archieve. In addition to individual occupations, their annual incomes, and their tax payments, the rasons for going out of occupation of the guilds, and resulting troubles have been also identified. The period of 1873-75 were the years of many social, political, and economic troubles for Ottoman State at national and regional levels. Findings of the study regarding changes in the guilds’ income and tax stuation demonstrates that Kayseri was one of the most affected Middle Anatolian cities experiencing the dramatic difficulties of the great drought period called as the Ninety Scarcity.
