Abstract :
Althougt it is not known for certain whether elifname, which generally handles religious matters, is a genre or a form, it is regarded and studied as a form acrostic or muwashshah. Samples of elifname are found in folkloric poetry, classical literature, religio-mystical Turkish literature and eastern literatures.This study is intended to examine elifname samples as found in Turkmenistan. Texts of the elifnames belonging to Mahtumkulu, Kemine, Magrupi, Gayibi, Tahir, and Berdinazar, are given and the place of this writing tradition in Turkmen literature is evaluated.
