Standards of University Libraries in Turkey
Abstract :
There are two types of universities in Turkey: State universities and private universities. Public universities are the institutions whose necessities, from their employees to their budgets, are supplied by the government. Besides being educational organizations, private universities are also commercial institutions. Private universities are managed in a sense of management method and the libraries are generally considered a good means of advertising which will be utilized in the promotion of the university. In this respect; both on account of architecture, equipment collection, employee and technological services, the libraries in private universities are far ahead of the public universities.The aim of this study, in general, is to propound the profiles of the university libraries in Turkey. With this aim, the prominent distinctions of being developed between the services and opportunities of the libraries are being analyzed and the extentions of the difference between public and private universities are called attention to. Besides; the distinctions of the quality that two types of libraries have within themselves are being tested. In terms of having services and opportunities, it is seen that the libraries of the public universities are quite behind the libraries of private universities. Considering the level of being developed, both two types of libraries have different values as well. The study ends with the suggestions directed towards the solution of the distinctions under considerations.
