A PAST TENSE APPENDIX ‘-çI’ IN TURKISH LANGUAGE
Abstract :
There are a few appendixes ‘-/+çI’ in the Turkish language. These are based on different sources and have different functions. The present work gives a short explanation on the appendix ‘-/+çI’, and then elaborates on the appendix ‘-/+çI’ which has the function of the past tense. This appendix is still being used in Tuva and Khakass which are Siberian Turkish dialects as well as in the Kyrgyz language which is also Siberian-based. The connection between the appendix ‘-/+çI’ and the appendix ‘-TI’, which is the oldest past tense known, is established as the parallel use of ‘-TI/-çI’, mainly through Idil-Bulgarian epigraphs. When those points are considered, it is suggested that the appendix ‘-/+çI’ should be evaluated as parallel to ‘-TI’ in the grammar of the Kyrgyz language.
