  • Abstract
In the broadest sense authoritarianism is characterized by over comformity, rigidness, authoritarian submission and prejudice and dependence on others. Among the many influences on the emergence of an authoritarian personality, researchers in particular, address authoritarian family context resulting in a lack of authentic, independent identity formation as the primary source of authoritarianism. Drawing on this assumption, present study aims to analyse the relationship between authoritarianism and identity styles and statuses of university students, and it further investigates the predictive role of identity statuses and identity styles on authoritarianism. The participants were 243 undergraduates from various departments of Istanbul University, Faculty of Education. Correlation analysis, and a hierarchical regression were conducted to analyse the data. Results of the regression analysis revealed that moratorium, identity foreclosure, and normative identity styles together predict the 40% of authoritarianism scores among young people.
