Title Of Article :
Elementary School Eight Grade Students’ Levels of Comprehending Basic Concepts Relating to Probability
Abstract :
Probability is a sub-learning domain that is still challenging for students. In this paper, we investigated the understanding levels of the concepts related with the probability and practising abilities of the eight level students. In this study, the sample group consisted of ninety eight level students who were enrolled in a primary education school. The data of the study were collected by the use of an achievement test on the concept of probability which was composed of 5 open ended questions. The data, gathered from students’ answers to the open ended questions were investigated and analysed by the use of percentage and frequency analysis. The results of the study revealed a significant importance of the students’ maturity on the learning of probability concepts and also indicated that students’ developmental level played a key role in the perception of some of the probability concepts. Moreover, it is also pointed out that students had difficulties in the interpretation of some of the probability concepts in understanding and using the sample spatial concept and in doing probabilistic reasoning.
