Abstract :
Basic Design course is taught in the first year of Art Education Departments of Education, and other Fine Arts and Design Faculties in Turkey for freshmen is a course which includes theorical information about the elements and principles of art and also practical sessions in two and three dimensional levels. The course aims to instruct students in relevant art concepts which includes the elements and principles of art, works and artists, as well as helping them observe their surroundings perceptively, learn to distinguish and make judgements and enhance their visual expression skills. The aim of this study is to understand how projects and exhibitions including various techniques contribute to students aesthetic sensibility and creativity. This study is a research paper. The study includes the responses by first year undergraduates during 2008-2009 school year to 12 propositions and 1 open-ended question on a project on Hats. The study included a total of 72 students. The responses have been collected and interpreted as frequencies and percentages. The responses to the study suggest that the students were a bit anxious before the project started, but as the project continued and the students aesthetic sensibility and creativity improved, they became more motivated to work. This suggests that students should be motivated through the introduction of new and various projects.
