Abstract :
The study aims to assess the pre-service Turkish language teachers’ general competences in teaching. Survey method was used in the study. The universe of the study consists of 168 senior pre-service teachers studying in the department of Turkish Language Teaching (TLT) at Karadeniz Technical University, Dumlupınar University, and Erzincan University in 2010-2011 spring terms. The sample of the study is composed of 127 voluntary participants whose 61 are female (48%), 66 male (52%). The data collected were analyzed through SPSS 16.0 program. The frequency, arithmetic mean, standard deviation of the data was measured by using t-test scale. The results of the study showed that pre-service teachers regarded themselves as competent in terms of encouraging self- development; “fairly competent” in terms of considering national and universal values; “competent” with regard to the follow-up and contribution to the Professional developments. The results were favorable for male pre-service teachers in terms of the follow-up and contribution to the professional developments while there was not found significant difference between male and female pre-service teachers in terms of considering national and universal values.
