Title Of Article :
Community Service Learning Course and Its Effects On Gaining Social Consciousness
Abstract :
The present study aims to reveal prospective teachers’ views on the significance and necessity of the CSL course as it relates to such qualities as social unity, social leadership, and social responsibility that should be present in any teacher. The research group was composed of 16 preservice social studies teachers studying at the Schools of Education of Samsun Ondokuz Mayıs University and Marmara University. Of the eight students interviewed at Marmara University, six were found to be members of NGOs such as TEMA, TEGEV, and LÖSEV, while only two of the eight students interviewed at Ondokuz Mayıs University had such memberships. This could be interpreted as Marmara University students being more sensitive to NGOs, however, these memberships were found to be on paper only and the students did not take part in the activities. While the prospective teachers stressed the importance of the CSL course, they complained about not being able to follow up the course activities due to daily preoccupations, problems in getting organized, and anxiety caused by examinations such as the KPSS and the ALES.
