Abstract :
This study aims to investigate cutaneous signs observed in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM).The study registered a total of 175 DM patients, 163 type II DM and 12 type I DM, who were inpatients in the Endocrinology Service of Fırat University. Anamneses of the patients were obtained and cutaneous and systemic signs of the patients were photographed and recorded. Skin biopsy was taken for histopathologic examination, when necessary; scrapings were taken from lesions where fungal infection was suspected for native preparation examination; bacterial culture and antibiogram examinations were carried out in lesions where bacterial infection was suspected.This study included a total of 175 adult DM patients whose age ranged between 18 and 89 and of whom 110 (62.9%) were female and 65 (37.1%) were male. Mean age of the patients was 56.88±14.8 years. Duration of the disease varied between 1 and 36 years. Of the patients, 151 (86.28%) had at least one cutaneous sign. The most common cutaneous sign was infection (43.4%), which included 57 (32.6%) dermatophyte, 10 (5.7%) bacterial infection, 7 (4%) candidiasis and 2 (1.1%) herpes labialis in order of frequency. The second most common sign was xerosis (40%), and the most frequent complaint reported by the patients was itching (20%). The most commonly observed systemic complication was hypertension (61.7%). While the average duration of illness of the patients with compliceted diabetes were 11.64±7:33 years who did not develop complications were 9:06±8:11. The differences between disease duration and presence of complications were statistically significant (p = 0.04). While the mean age of patients with compliceted diabetes were 59.79 ±12.62 years who did not develop complications were 51.44±17:07 years. There was a statistically significant relationships between the average age and the presence of complications (p=0.01). In conclusion, we found that the most common cutaneous sign was infection and the most common systemic complication was hypertension in DM patients.
