Investigation of Risk Factors in Patients With Lumbar Disc Hernia

This descriptive study was performed to investigate the risk factors of patients with lumbar disc hernia (LDH). The research has been carried about between February 01 – May 31 2008, a state hospital, brain surgery clinic of policlinic. The data were collected from the patients who have been diagnosed with LDH and have accepted to take place in the surgery (n=75) with talking face to face with the patients using the questionnaire that was prepared by investigating the literature. The questionnaire consisted 34 questions about socio-demographic and identifying information, the risk factors of LDH. In the analysis of the data number and percentage are used. According to the findings, the age average of patients was 49.39±15.05. It was found that 68.0% of patients were women, 49.3% were educated from primary school, 52% were housewives, 22.7% were farmers. It was also found that 33.3% of the patients were overweighed and 22.7% of the patients were obesity. 49.3% of the patient’s jobs required to be stand, 48.0% of them have had a trauma before and 50% of the ones that have had trauma before hand lift heavy things. As a result of the research the risk factors of patients with lumbar disc hernia were found overweighed, the patients’ jobs required to be seated most of the time, trauma had previously, lifting something heavy. Overall, it is suggested to give education about the preventable risk factors to increase the consciousness of patients.
