Investigation of Patients Who Underwent Emergency Peripartum Hysterectomy: 3 Year Experience
Abstract :
Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the demographic properties of patients who underwent emergency peripartum hysterectomy was to examine retrospectively. Material and Methods: We retrospectively analysed the cases who underwent emergency periparum hysterectomy between June 2008-June 2011 in Kızıltepe State Hospital department of obstetrics and gynecology. Patients demographics, indications hysterectomies and types of hysterectomy (subtotal or total hysterectomy) were recorded. Maternal end fetal mortality rates were determined. Results: In this period, 14 cases were recorded and identified as a 0.86% incidence of peripartum bleeding. 8 (57,1%) patient with total abdominal hysterectomy, 6 (42,9%) subtotal hysterectomy was performed in the cases. Indications for hysterectomy 9 (64,3%) atony, 3 (21,4%) uterine rupture and 2 (14.3%) placenta percreata were recorded. Hysterectomies 3 of them 21,4% by cesarean delivery, 11 of them also 78.6% was applied followed by vaginal birth. 6 (42,9%) patients underwent bilateral hypogastric artery ligation. No maternal mortality and only one fetal mortality were recorded. Conclusion: The most common indication of emergency peripartum hysterectomy is uterine atony. Emergency peripartum hysterectomy is a lifesaving procedure when performed appropriate and timely indication.
