Prevalence and Contributing Factors of Premenstrual Syndrome Among Patients in Izmir Aegean Obstetrics and Gynecology Teaching Hospital
Abstract :
Objective: Premenstruel syndrome (PMS) is one of the most common of the diseases in women at reproductive age. The aim of the present study is to determine PMS prevalence in our country and to inform patient about this stuation so help their treatment modality. Material and Methods: Questionnaire was prepared according to the DSM IV criterias were administered to patients by face to face interview to 897 women ages between 15-49 years who came to our clinic from August 2010 to March 2011 because of different complaints. Results: As many as 93.2% (n:836) of the women had mild or severe symptoms in premenstrual period. 32% (n:294) of women had diagnosis of PMS according to questionnaire were derived from DSM-IV. Most of the symptoms in this study were breast tenderness (52.6%), fatigue (48.2%), edema (46.8%), lumbalgia (44.6%). Conclusion: Prevalence of PMS is frequent in population. All members of the society can be affected by this syndrome. Thus, this problem should be considered seriously in diagnosis and to reduce the prevalence and increase quality of life for women with PMS specific prevention measures should be taken.
