Abstract :
Objective: The aim of the present study was to determine Toxoplasma seroprevalence among serum samples sent to the Central Laboratory of Firat University Hospital in 2012 from various clinics with the suspicion of toxoplasmosis. Materials and Methods: Serum samples of a total of 719 patients (350 females and 369 males) were tested for the presence of anti-T. gondii IgM and anti-T. gondii IgG antibodies using the ELISA method. Results: Of the serum samples, 141 (19.6%) tested positive for T. gondii IgG, 9 (1.3%) tested positive for T. gondii IgM, and 39 (5.4%) tested positive for IgG and IgM. The highest rate of seropositivity was observed in IgG in patients above 60 years of age (60%) and for IgM in the 0-9 year age group (1.4%); the rate of seropositivity was higher in women than in men. Conclusion: Higher seropositivity for IgM in the 30-39 year age group and in women indicates the importance of routine serologic testing for toxoplasmosis when the importance of acute infections is taken into account, particularly during pregnancy.
