Abstract :
Objective: To evaluate our early results of the impantation of intravitreal dexamethasone in the treatment of macular edema due to diabetic retinopathy and retinal venous obstruction. Materials and Methods: Eleven eyes of 10 patients diagnosed macular edema secondary to diabetic retinopathy and branch or central retinal venous obstruction diagnosed in eye disease clinic retina section were included in the study. 0.7 mg dexamethasone implant was injected intravitreally under topical anesthesia. Best–corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central macular thickness (CMT) and intraocular pressure (IOP) before and after injection were measured. Results: The mean follow-up time was 6 months. The mean age of the patients was 58.5±6.8 years. Macular edema was associated with diabetic retinopathy in 4 eyes and retinal venous occlusion in 7 eyes. The initial and final BCVAs to Snellen charts were 0.17±0.12 and 0.25 ±0.16, respectively. There was no significant difference between visual acuities before and after injection (P= 0.06). The initial and final CMTs were 510±123.6 and 363±146.7 micrometers, respectively. The difference in CMTs between before and after the injection was statistically significant (P= 0.03). The mean IOP was 17.7±1.2 mmHg before injection, 16.3±0.9 in first month, 17.4±1.5 in third month and 16.6±1.6 mmHg sixth month. There was no statistical significantly difference in IOPs among before and after injection (P= 0.06). Conclusion: Intravitreal injection of dexamethasone implant in the treatment of macular edema, provides anatomical recovery in the early period while its effect on functional recovery was not significantly. Long term results of the implantation of drug could be further illuminate our in this
