Abstract
Objective: Inadequate assessment of pain in premature infants is a persistent clinical problem. The objective of this research is evaluating the reliability and validity of Prematüre Infant Pain Profil (PIPP) that could be used by both clinicians and researchers for assessing pain in premature infants. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted with 50 premature infants at total. The infants who were between 26–36 weeks, have not got any congenital abnormality or sepsis, not taking ventilation support, surgical intervention and sedative or analgesic treatment were included in the study. Video camera, monitor were used for evaluating pain and PIPP was used for behavioral and physiologic responses of infants at bloodletting. Data were evaluated by using SPSS for Windows 11.5 program. Results: PIPP scores of premature infants were 4.0, 15.0 and 7.0 for before, during and after invasive procedures, respectively. Consistency of PIPP elements was between 0.68–0.78, homogeneity was found between 0.48–0.95. Inter-rater reliability was found between 0.85–0.99. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that the structure validity of PIPP and reliability between inter-raters and all PIPP scores were high in evaluation invasive pain at preterm and term infants in clinic practice. Concurrent validation studies should be considered
