Title Of Article :
Levels of Vitamin D in Patients with Stable Period Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Abstract :
Objective: To determine the levels of vitamin D in COPD patients and the relationship of vitamin D with pulmonary function test (PFT) and arterial blood gases (ABG) parameters. Materials and Methods: Seventy one patients with stable COPD and 20 healthy controls included to the study. Demographic characteristics, smoking history of COPD patients were recorded. PFT and ABG parameters were measured. The levels of plasma 25-OH D were measured in all subjects by HPLC (High-performance liquid chromatography) methods. Results: There was no statistically significant difference in age and gender between COPD patients and healthy controls (P 0.05). The mean plasma 25-OH D levels were 8.07±5.09 ng/mL in COPD patients and 12.27±5.50 ng/mL in healthy controls. The mean plasma 25-OH D levels was significantly lower in COPD patients than healthy controls (P=0.002). By the evaluation of the COPD patients according to classification of airflow limitation severity; it revealed that 18 (%19.8) of them were GOLD II, 30 (%33) of them were GOLD III and 23 (%25.3) of them were GOLD IV. There was no statistically significant difference for plasma 25-OH D levels between COPD GOLD II-III-IV patients (P 0.05). There was no correlation between plasma 25-OH D levels and ABG parameters. Plasma levels of 25-OH D showed a positive correlation with FEV1 and FVC values (respectively, r=0.268, P=0.024 and r=0.494, P=0.001). Conclusions: The findings of this study indicated that plasma levels of 25-OH D may be low in COPD patients and decreased 25-OH D levels may contribute on worsening of respiratory functions
