Abstract :
Objective: Appendicitis is still the most common cause of acute abdomen in the world wide. Currently,the necessity of performing appendectomy has been discussed and alternative medical therapies have been proposed. The aim of the present study is to discuss its necessity together our appendectomy experience. Materials and Methods: The hospital records were reviewed between 01/2012-12/2016.Detected 2376 cases were analyzed based on histopathological diagnosis,age,and sex. Results: The majority of cases (61.1%) were male and it was most commonly seen in the 20-29 years age group.The diagnosis of appendicitis was confirmed in 83% of the cases.The rate of negative appendectomy (15.92%) was statistically significantly higher in females (P=0.001). The mean age was statistically higher in patients diagnosed with premalignant lesions and perforated appendicitis (P=0.001). Premalignant/malignant neoplasms were detected in 25 cases (1.05%). Conclusion: In conclusion,a multidisciplinary approach with monitorization in the hospital setting and using medical therapy options would reduce negative appendectomy rates in young patients, whereas performing appendectomy in the advanced age group would be more beneficial in reducing the risk of mortality and avoiding underdiagnosis of malignancies.
