Retrospective Evaluation of Platelet Parameters in Patients with Acne Vulgaris under İsotretinoin Treatment

Objective: Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory disease which has a multifactorial etiology affecting pilosebaceous unit. Isotretinoin (13-cis retinoic acid) is a retinoid, widely used in treatment, which is efficient to all factors in acne patogenesis. The clinical trials on effects of Isotretinoin on platelet parameters are quite a few, and there are conflicting results in the relevant literature. It was aimed to retrospectively evaluate the changes which isotretinoin makes on platelet parameters. Materials and Methods: 100 patients with mild and severe acne vulgaris who were administered oral isotretinoin were included in the study. The platelet parameters of the patients before treatment and during 3rd and 6th months of treatment [platelet (PLT), mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet-large cell ratio (P-LCR), platelet distribution width (PDW), plateletcrit (PCT)] were retrospectively evaluated by scanning the patients’ files. Results: On examining the patients’ pre-treatment, 3rd and 6th month platelet parameters; it was identified that a reduction occured in the PLCR value in the course of time, however the change among three measurements was not statistically significant (P= 0.336). When PLT, MPV, PDW and PCT levels were evaluated, there was no significant difference among three measurements Conclusion: We think that although it was not statistically significant, the lineaar reduction in the PLCR level during the treatment may be related to the bone marrow supression of isotretinoin. Caution should be exercised in terms of haematological complications as the duration of treatment with isotretinoin is prolonged.
