Abstract :
Echinococcosis is still very important disease affecting animal health and causing economic losses in Turkey. This study aimed to investigate general knowledge and practice of dairy farmers on the cystic echinococcosis in Kars where animal husbandry is extensive. The material of this study was consisted of survey data obtained from 92 dairy cattle farmers in central villages of Kars. The results showed that the farmers slaughter a mean of 1.78 beef cattle/year at home and they noticed liver cysts in 30.5% of those animals. 5.4% of the participants reported history of hydatid cyst in their family members and 7.6% claimed that they know the transmission routes of the disease. Only 33.7% of the farmers were using embedding method for discarding cystic livers of slaughtered animals. The dogs owned by 19.5% of the participants were receiving regular veterinary service, 35.6% of the farmers were applying antiparasitic drugs to their dogs which costed 32.30 TL per annum. It is concluded that general knowledge level of and protection measures taken by farmers for cystic echinococcosis were inadequate in Kars.
