Helminths Found by Faecal Examination in the Equine in Afyonkarahisar Region

This study was carried out to determine the helminth infections in the equine in Afyonkarahisar region. Fresh fecal samples were obtained from 104 animals (70 donkeys and 34 horses) and examined by flotation, sedimentation and Baermann Wetzel methods. Third larval stage (L3) was collected from coproculture prepared from fecal samples containing Strongylid eggs and identified on the basis of genus or species. Fortyfour out of 70 donkeys (62.86%) and 24 out of 34 horses (70.59%) were infected at least one of the species examined. Strongylid eggs were observed in all horses infected however Parascaris equorum eggs were seen around 33.33% of horses. In donkeys strongylid eggs were present as high as 95.45% whereas Parascaris equorum eggs were seen only at 4.54%. It was concluded that equine animals were significantly infected wit helminths in the region of Afyonkarahisar and effective parasite control measures should implicated.
