Abstract :
Epidermal growth factor is a growth factor in protein structure that stimulating division, differentiation, survival, proliferation, growth and migration of the cells which takes role in many physiological and pathological processes of the organism. EGF has anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, neuroprotective and neurotrophic effects. Epidermal growth factor receptors are located on the cell surface of many tissues that include lung, stomach, duodenum, pancreas, kidney, pituitary gland, thyroid gland, mammary gland, ovary, uterus, placenta, cornea and glia. Platelets, macrophages, monocytes and fibroblasts are also source of epidermal growth factor. EGF exerts its effects through binding to EGFR mainly by activating MAPK, ERK 1/2, PI3K-Akt, PLC-γ, JAK/STAT intracellular signaling pathways. Epidermal growth factor exerts its effect mainly on the digestive, reproductive and nervous system. Epidermal growth factor administration especially in treatment of wounds has success because of its stimulating effect on growth and proliferation of fibroblasts, keratinocytes and vascular endothelial cells. The aim of this review is to summarize the structure, sources, receptor, effect mechanism, effects and for use in therapy of epidermal growth factor.
