Abstract :
Background : Burnout syndrome affecting the entirety of work life is characterized by emotional exhaustion, treating people as if they are objects, and loss of meaning or purpose in work. Burnout among physicians seems to have important negative professional consequences. There have been scarce studies on burnout among Lebanese practicing physicians and limited inquiry into the factors leading to it. Objectives : Assess the prevalence of burnout among Lebanese practicing physicians and identify which factors, are associated with high burnout. Methods : Using the Maslach Burnout Inventory for Health Services Workers, a cross-sectional survey was conducted among physicians in two major academic hospitals in the capital city. A total of 156 physicians responded. Results : The prevalence of burnout was the highest in the domain of emotional exhaustion (37.2%). Being exposed to a major stress event, coping negatively with stress, complaining of somatic symptoms, making errors in their prescriptions and in behavior… increased the odds of burnout in at least one domain. Conclusions : Burnout is prevalent among physicians in two tertiary centers and was comparable to most other studies. Several factors associated with burnout have been identified. Further studies are needed to understand how to address the problem of burnout and avoid its consequences.
