Abstract :
Materials and construction techniques of roof gardens have showed significant development in recent years. History of roof gardens which was built for aesthetic purposes dates back to BC 2000. While roof gardens were used as esthetical elements in the past, they are built for ecologic benefits today. To withstand long cold winters, North European explorers devised methods for living under extreme conditions. One of these methods was the sod roof, a roof covered with soil for insulation that was planted with grasses and other plants. This approach has become an inspiration for the modern green roofs of today. In the early 1960’s green roof technology was developed in Switzerland and enhanced in many countries, particularly. Green roofs have become a profession in construction and landscape area. Every day lighter and more durable materials and new techniques are emerging for the roof gardens, which have a wide application area in the world. Modern green roofs consist of constructional layers, which are produced from recycled materials. Green roofs, which are built with new materials, are lighter and more durable than traditional roof gardens. Main aim of this study is to determine the constructional properties of important roof gardens in Istanbul. During this research, usage of new technologies in these roof gardens was put forward with the constructional properties and functions of roof gardens in Istanbul.
