مرکز منطقه ای اطلاع رساني علوم و فناوري - RETROSPECTIVE ANALYSIS OF THE INTRAOPERATIVE FINDINGS OF OUR PATIENTS OPERATED ON FOR CHRONIC OTITIS MEDIA

Abstract :

Purpose: To retrospectively analyze patients that were operated in our clinic for chronic otitis media in terms of the surgical procedure applied and the anatomical variations encountered. Materials and Methods: The surgical procedures and the encountered anatomical variations in the middle ear and the temporal bone of 38 patients that were operated 011 for chronic otitis media between March 2008 and September 2009 were retrospectively examined. Results: Of the 38 patients, 23 (60.5%) were female and 15 (39.5%) were male. The ages ranged between 12 and 53 years (median 24 years). Among the patients included in the study, the opposite ear was normal in 27 of the patients, whereas 11 patients had a coexisting pathology in the opposite ear. Sixteen (42%) patients underwent myringoplasty and 22 (58%) patients underwent tympanomastoidectomy. Conclusion: Today, unconscious use of excessive antibiotics leads to suppression of the signs and symptoms of chronic otitis media. Patients with otologic problems should be informed of the severity of the condition at admission and appropriate medical and surgical therapeutic interventions should be initiated promptly.
