Abstract
According to Islam philosopher Ghazali (1058-1111), who believed that the most important goal of education was to beautify morality, parents and teachers are responsible for educating children who have been entrusted to them by Allah. This study addresses al-Ghazali’s perception of moral education and especially his ideas about child education. According to al-Ghazali, who worked as a teacher in Nizamiye Madrasah, the behavior of parents and teachers should serve as good examples for children. So, al-Ghazali’s idea on adult behavior is also addressed in this study. It is found out in this study that the basis of his ideas on moral education stems from his ideas on human beings. Considering this point, his idea on human-beings is also mentioned in this study. In the end of the study, it is also found out that al-Ghazali’s philosophy of education as a medieval philosopher has some similarities with the ideas lying under the modern education principles. Like the education approach of al-Ghazali, a great part of the modern education approaches has been formed within the framework of human-centered theories.
