Title Of Article :
Investigation of the Visualization Processes in Quadratic Surfaces Topic in Terms of Faculty Differences
Abstract :
The studies related to visualization were generally conducted to students in high school and lower levels, even though visualization is in the use of transition from the abstract concepts and symbolic representations to concrete one to make the concepts more understandable in every education level. This study investigated the relations among university students’ performance processes on basic drawings of the 3-D shapes in calculus lessons according to these shapes’ figures, names and formulas. The sample was chosen conveniently and it was composed of 90 students from science faculty, faculty of education and faculty of technology at a public university in Istanbul. Test and interview were research techniques used for gathering data from the student to evaluate the teaching environment and visualization process. Findings showed that the vast majority of the students had difficulties in the process of transition between symbolic and visual representations of quadratic surfaces. It was also observed that, visualization performance have affected from the faculty differences. The findings have been discussed in terms of epistemological belief and previous learning experiments. In addition, some suggestions have been shared to improve teaching environments.
