Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the perceptions of middle school students on history. The method of the research was the cross-sectional design. Maximum variety sampling was used to determine the study group. The study group composed of 215 middle school students. Data were collected in December in 2013. Content and descriptive analyses were used to interpret the data. The results showed that middle school students in study group perceived history as “the events of past”, “calendar time”, “historical artifacts” and “cultural assets”. Findings showed that participants perceived history not only as past political events such as battles, treaties and peace but also social history topics such as inventions, discoveries and immigrations. Besides, it can be concluded that participants perceive history as living historical and cultural heritage such as archaeological ruins, historical buildings, celebrations, ceremonies, rituals. It can be concluded that social studies program affected middle school students’ perceptions of history.
