Effect of Using Local History in History Teaching on Academic Achievement and Historical Thinking Skills
Abstract :
This research aimed to reveal the effects of using activities based on local history sources in 10th grade history courses on academic achievements and historical thinking skills of students. The research was performed in spring semester of 2011-2012 academic year, with 10th grade students in a high school which is within the borders of İzmir. The research design is experimental design with pre test-post test paired control group. Based on the mixed method research design, data were obtained by the “Academic Achievement Test” developed by the researcher and worksheets used in the course of applications. At the end of the research, covering the history courses through the activities based on local history and local history resources was seen to be more effective than the traditional method to increase the academic achievements of the students. Moreover, it was concluded that the students were easily performed some of the sub-skills of historical thinking skills and had difficulty to perform some others while studying with local history resources.
