The Role of Feedback Given by Mathematics Teachers to Students Mistakes in Their Self-Esteem
Abstract :
The aim of this study is to investigate the role of feedback given by teachers to students’ mistakes in their self-esteem. This study is a phenomenological qualitative inquiry. The participants who were selected through purposeful sampling consisted of six mathematics teachers and seven 9th grade students of a public high school. Interviews and observations constituted the data collection instruments of this study. Descriptive analysis of the qualitative data showed that the facilitative and incentive feedback types used by the mathematics teachers affected students’ self-esteem positively; however, the corrective and punitive feedback types affected students’ self-esteem negatively. Moreover, explanatory and interrogative feedback types were found to have both positive and negative roles in self-esteem based on how they were used.
