Title Of Article :
On the Compass-Straightedge and Geogebra Constructions: Teachers’ Geometric Construction Processes and Perceptions
Abstract :
The purpose of this study is to investigate teachers’ problem solving processes of basic geometry constructions with various physical tools (compass-straightedge constructions [PCİ]) and dynamic geometry software (Geogebra constructions [Gİ]) and their perceptions about this issue. This study is a qualitative case study whose participants are composed of four elementary school mathematics teachers. As data collection tool, “Basic Geometry Constructions Test (TGİT)”, which was prepared by the researchers by benefiting from Elements book by Euclid, was applied to teachers. In addition, teachers were subjected to semi-structured interview forms in order to gather their perceptions about this issue. Lastly, focus group interview was conducted with the teachers. The data were analyzed with content analysis method. It was found that teachers’ achievements were low while trying to complete the tasks with different tools. Findings gathered from interview forms and focus group interviews were analyzed and discussed according to three main themes. Comparing PCİ and Gİ, since Geogebra allows teachers to do trial and error, it was observed that some of the constructions teachers could not perform with compass and straightedge were performed via Geogebra. In addition, there were differences in teachers’ opinions about the comparison of construction types.
